How much does custom software cost in 2026? Real ranges

Most answers to this question are a range so wide it is useless, because the vendor does not want to commit. We publish our prices, so this guide uses them as the reference, explains what pushes a project up or down, and lists the costs that quotes leave out.

Custom software in 2026 costs from about $35,000 for a focused web or app MVP to $90,000 or more for a multi-tenant SaaS product at nearshore senior rates; a Flutter app for iOS and Android starts around $45,000. Hourly, senior nearshore engineers run $45 to $90. Scope, integrations and compliance move the number most.

What does custom software cost? Our published prices

These are the fixed-scope prices we publish on our pricing page, for work done by a senior team in Guadalajara, Mexico, on US business hours. They are starting points for a written scope, not estimates that move later. The timelines are typical for a project that starts with a clear owner on the client side.

What are custom software development rates per hour?

Hourly rates are the honest way to compare vendors when the scope is not fixed yet. Ours are published: $45 an hour for a mid-level engineer, $65 for a senior engineer, $50 for a UX/UI designer, $75 for DevOps and $90 for a tech lead or architect.

For the market, Clutch's pricing directory (accessed September 21, 2026) places most agencies in Mexico between $25 and $49 an hour and most in the United States between $50 and $99. A rate at the bottom of the Mexican band usually means a mid-level engineer or a shared team; a senior dedicated engineer sits higher. The rate matters less than what the hour produces, which is why fixed scope exists.

Hourly rates, published (USD, 2026)
RoleRate per hour
Mid-level engineer$45
Senior engineer$65
UX/UI designer$50
DevOps / SRE$75
Tech lead / architect$90

What makes a project cost more?

Five things move the number more than anything else.

  • Screens and roles. Every distinct screen and every user role (customer, admin, driver, accountant) is design, code and tests. An MVP with eight screens and two roles is a different project from one with thirty screens and five.
  • Integrations. Each external system (payments, ERP, CRM, messaging, e-invoicing) adds mapping, error handling and reconciliation. Integrations with poor or undocumented APIs cost more than the feature they serve.
  • Compliance. Health data, financial regulations, Mexican tax rules or Florida condominium law add required fields, audit trails and review time, and often a lawyer or accountant in the loop.
  • Real-time and offline. Live status, notifications, chat and apps that must work without signal are harder to build and test than request-and-response screens.
  • Unclear ownership. A project where nobody on the client side can answer questions within a day costs more in calendar time and in rework. The cheapest thing you can add to a project is a decision-maker.

What makes a project cost less?

Cutting scope, not quality. The MVP discipline is to ship the smallest system that changes how the business operates, then add. Reusing what you already run instead of replacing it: a portal on top of your current ERP costs less than a new ERP. Choosing one codebase for two platforms (Flutter) instead of two native apps. Publishing the price and fixing the scope, which removes the padding vendors add to open-ended estimates.

And starting with a review when there is an existing system. A one-week, $2,500 architecture review often turns a “rewrite everything” budget into a staged plan at a fraction of the cost.

What costs do quotes usually leave out?

Hosting and third-party services (cloud, payment processor fees, messaging fees, app store accounts), which you pay directly and which continue after launch. Support and maintenance after the project, which every production system needs; our plans start at $1,800 a month. Your own team's time: testing weekly releases, answering questions, migrating data. Store review cycles for mobile apps. And data migration from the old system, which is small when the data is clean and large when it is not.

Ask every vendor for those five lines. A quote without them is a quote for half the project.

How does this compare with hiring developers?

For reference, median pay for software developers in the Miami area: $132,650 a year (BLS OEWS, May 2025), before benefits and payroll taxes, and a project needs more than one skill (design, backend, mobile, infrastructure). A fixed-scope project buys those skills for the weeks you need them; a dedicated engineer at $11,500 a month buys one of them continuously. The guide to developer cost in Miami versus nearshore Mexico works through the hiring math in detail.

How do we price a project?

A thirty-minute call to understand the problem, then a written scope: screens, roles, integrations, milestones and a fixed price. Fixed-scope projects take a 50 percent deposit and bill the rest by milestone, net 15, in US dollars. Code and IP ownership are set out in writing in the proposal and the contract, and the written scope is the document both sides go back to when a question comes up. We built the bilingual booking and payment flow on exactly this model, and we operate our own platform with the same stack we quote to you.

What to have ready before asking for a quote

  • Who uses the system (roles) and what each one needs to do
  • The systems it must connect to, and whether you have API access to them
  • Any regulation that applies (health, finance, tax, housing law)
  • What exists today: spreadsheets, an old system, a SaaS you are leaving
  • Who on your side can answer questions within a day
  • Launch date and why that date
  • Budget band, so the scope can be cut to fit it honestly

Questions · Custom software cost

How much does custom software development cost in 2026?

From about $35,000 for a focused MVP to $90,000 or more for a multi-tenant SaaS product, at senior nearshore rates; mobile apps on both platforms start around $45,000. Those are our published prices, and scope, integrations and compliance are what move them.

What is the custom software development cost per hour?

Our published rates run from $45 an hour for a mid-level engineer to $90 for a tech lead, with senior engineers at $65. Market rates on Clutch mostly fall between $25 and $49 in Mexico and $50 and $99 in the United States.

How much does it cost to build an app for my business?

From $45,000 for a Flutter app on iOS and Android with its backend, in eight to twelve weeks. Screens, roles, offline mode, payments and integrations are what change the number.

Why do quotes for the same project vary so much?

Because they are not for the same project. Vendors scope differently, include different things and price different seniority. Compare written scopes line by line, not totals, and ask what is left out.

Is a fixed price or hourly billing better?

Fixed price when the scope can be written down, which is most business software. Hourly for exploration, research or a backlog that changes weekly. We do both and say which one fits on the first call.

Can I get a firm number before committing?

Yes. Our goal for a thirty-minute call is a written scope and a fixed price; when an existing system has to be understood first, a one-week $2,500 architecture review does it.
